3.3.11. Check and adjustment of gaps in the drive of valves


For compensation of temperature expansion in the drive of valves there has to be a certain gap. Too small gap leads to violation of phases of gas distribution and decrease in a compression. In extreme cases valves are deformed and burn slightly.

Too big gap leads to strong noise during the work. Phases of gas distribution are broken. Owing to small time of opening of valves and bad filling of cylinders engine capacity decreases and its work becomes unstable.

The correct operation of valves is possible only when valves have good consolidation, gaps in their drive do not exceed admissible values, and the ends of cores of valves have no peening.

Gaps in the drive of valves need to be checked and regulated at planned maintenance, after repair and at emergence of noise in the valvate mechanism. Gaps in valves are checked and regulated on the cold engine.

Determination of thickness of an adjusting washer

To measure a micrometer thickness of earlier standing adjusting washer. To write down result. Designation of thickness of a washer is on one of its parties.

For calculation of thickness of a washer it is possible to use the following formula:

N = T + (A – S), where

N – thickness of a new adjusting washer,
T – thickness of the removed washer,
A – the current gap in the valve,
S – a necessary gap in the valve.

1. Uncover a head of cylinders.
2. To turn a bent shaft so that the ledge of a cam of the adjustable valve was directed up. To turn a pusher glass so that the groove of a pusher was directed forward.
3. For a provorachivaniye of a bent shaft to include the 5th transfer, to raise a jack one of forward wheels and to turn a wheel manually.
4. Check a gap in the drive of valves. It has to make: at inlet valves – 0,15 mm, at final – 0,25 mm.
5. The probe has to enter with easy friction. Otherwise adjustment of a gap is required.
6. To turn the crankshaft and to repeat the above described procedure with other valves.
7. If adjustment of a gap is necessary, then to determine the size of a gap by a set of probes and to write down it.
8. Establish into place a cover of a head of cylinders and to tighten bolts of its fastening the moment of 10 Nanometers.


1. The gap in valves is regulated by replacement of adjusting washers with washers of the necessary thickness. For this purpose it is necessary to squeeze a valve spring. It is necessary to use the device for compression of valvate springs of Opel KM-650.
2. To take out an adjusting washer.
3. To determine the necessary thickness of an adjusting washer.
4. To oil a new adjusting washer of the necessary thickness and to establish it into place.


At installation of an adjusting washer to track that its marking was directed down.

5. To adjust in the same way gaps in all valves.
