The ‘Mayo Action on Heart Disease & Stroke’ programme adopts a multi-faceted approach to cardiovascular disease prevention, and involves a number of initiatives which aim to reduce the impact of heart disease and stroke in Mayo.‘Heart Smart’ is a nurse-led community-based high-risk screening programme which targets individuals who do not attend general practice and offers them free-of-charge cardiac risk assessments.
To date over 1800 individuals have benefited from this programme in Mayo in novel community locations as varied as farmers’ marts, libraries, and community centres.
Originally known as the ‘Heart Smart’ Mayo Programme, this community prevention programme stems from a partnership between Croí and Mayo Primary, Community and Continuing Care, HSE West.A month-long media campaign was also delivered with radio interviews and newspapers articles on various topics relating to healthy living such as exercise, risk factor awareness, and healthy eating. This health promotion initiative was developed to engage all age-groups and encourage individuals to make some lifestyle changes to improve their cardiovascular health. The route — all paved — takes a clockwise spin around campus with scenic inroads around the Reflecting Pond and Willow Lake.Heart-healthy snacks will be at the Heart Walk festival area.
